The Easter season is meant for the remembrance and celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ by Christians who mark the period with church services but for the members of the Emmanuel Methodist Church at Obomeng, Kwahu in the Eastern Region, it means abandoning their activities.<\/p>\n

This is because the church is located on the Obomeng High Street, which is the epicenter of the Easter celebrations on the Kwahu Ridge where the biggest of street jams take place with alcoholic beverages, indecent fashion and all the things that Christianity frowns on.<\/p>\n

This Easter season, with the absence of the congregation, Kasapreko, producers of Alomo Bitters turned the uncompleted church building into an \u201cAlomo Village\u201d which housed a bar, a fufu joint, a live band arena (during the day) and a night club.<\/p>\n

At night, a kaleidoscope of colors dominated by yellow, took over the building as revelers danced to ear-splitting music in the temporary discotheque with alcohol flowing everywhere.<\/p>\n

It was a scene of vulgarity with some female revelers wearing skimpy and tight shorts, leggings and brassieres only, while some of their male counterparts danced around bare-chested.<\/p>\n

Almost every single secular song that connotes and promotes obscenity was played inside the church building \u2014 with women twerking while the men stood glued behind them, twisting and turning their waists.<\/p>\n

Obomeng High Street<\/p>\n

Located on a street that on ordinary days is quiet but described by some as \u201cthe street of hell\u201d during Easter, the church is forced to abandon its building and its members join other congregations until after the festivities.<\/p>\n

Not even the presence of a group \u2014 Word on the Street \u2014 carrying biblical messages calling people to repent could distract holiday makers going in and out of the building.<\/p>\n

The church was not the only building taken over by businesses cashing in on the season on the Obomeng High Street. Some homeowners gave out the frontage of their properties to organisations, including night clubs operations, alcoholic beverage companies among others, to do business.<\/p>\n

Church reaction<\/p>\n

When The Mirror newspaper contacted, the Administrator of the Nkawkaw Diocese of the Methodist Church, Very Rev. Daniel Agyei confirmed what he described as a worrying situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our chapel at Obomeng, we are unable to even attend church service because the whole premises has been taken over by traders.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, things they are trading in like wine and alcoholic drinks are contrary to the occasion we are celebrating,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said the church over the years had not insisted on taking the building from the traders because the atmosphere was not conducive for worship and the church was not interested in a confrontation.<\/p>\n

Very Rev. Agyei, who is also the Circuit Minister of the Obo Circuit of the church, said the church would have to complete its building and fence it to ward off the traders and companies that turned it into a trading centre during the Easter festivities.<\/p>\n

\u201cEaster is an occasion for people to reflect on their lives and compare it to how God expects us to live according to the way Jesus Christ came to show us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He expressed concern about the high level of debauchery that had become associated with Easter celebrations and urged young people to have time for God rather than the excessive pleasure they sought.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it looks as if we are rather teasing God about what He has done for us through the type of negative things we do during Easter. Poor dressing to expose ourselves and taking in so much alcohol and engaging in illicit sexual behaviour at such a time, I don\u2019t think it is the best,” he said.<\/p>\n

The minister said such had been the influence of the secular celebrations that the Local Council of Churches was compelled to hold its conventions a week before the Easter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way people are into these secular activities, if you put the crusade on the same day it will not work. So you do it a week earlier to sensitise the people to the fact that they should be careful of these things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
