Biggest Thursday preview grosses:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Avengers: Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>earned $39 million in Thursday previews last year, which was second only to\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em>\u2019 $57 million Thursday gross and\u00a0Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/em>\u2019s $45 million Thursday gross. \u00a0While it may be a close call, I don\u2019t necessarily expect\u00a0Endgame\u00a0<\/em>to best this specific record. The MCU has never banked on massive preview screenings, earning its success via being a general audience attraction that is as appealing to the \u201cGee, let\u2019s see a movie tonight!\u201d crowd as the hardcore fan base. But I do expect\u00a0Infinity War<\/em>\u2019s $39 million Thursday preview gross to be topped, giving it the biggest MCU preview gross ever.<\/p>\n

Biggest \u201cpure Friday\u201d gross:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite several bigger opening weekend figures and not coming close to the opening day\/Friday record,\u00a0Jurassic World\u00a0<\/em>still holds the record for the second-biggest \u201cpure Friday\u201d gross, with $63.2 million sans its $18.5m Thursday preview figures.\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>finally topped that figure last year with a $39 million Thursday gross and a $106 million Friday gross, translating into a $67 million \u201cpure Friday\u201d gross. I expect a similar result this time around, although it\u2019s possible that the opening day could be more Thursday-slanted this time out. After last year, I\u2019d be a little surprised if this record doesn\u2019t fall, even if the overall Friday may or may not top the $119 million opening day gross of\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Biggest opening day\/biggest Friday gross:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Counting its $57 million in Thursday previews,\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens\u00a0<\/em>earned a colossal $119.119 million on its first day in domestic release. The next biggest days are\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>($106 million),\u00a0The Last Jedi\u00a0<\/em>($105 million), \u00a0Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part II\u00a0<\/em>($91 million),\u00a0Avengers: Age of Ultron\u00a0<\/em>($84 million),\u00a0Jurassic World\u00a0<\/em>($82 million) and\u00a0The Avengers\u00a0<\/em>($80 million). I\u2019d argue that\u00a0Endgame\u00a0<\/em>is sure to end up among the top two or three (at worst) biggest opening day numbers of all time. A 13% jump from\u00a0Infinity War<\/em>\u2019s $106 million Friday gets it to $120 million, which is good for the (unadjusted) record.<\/p>\n

Biggest Saturday gross:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since the last three\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>movies were a bit frontloaded on their opening weekends, with around 2x their Friday grosses, the biggest Saturday grosses belong to\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>($82 million),\u00a0Jurassic World\u00a0<\/em>($69.6 million) and\u00a0The Avengers\u00a0<\/em>($69.5 million). Most of those films (along with\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>) dropped just 13-15% from Friday to Saturday, while\u00a0The Force Awakens\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Age of Ultron\u00a0<\/em>dropped 33-42% from their opening day grosses.\u00a0Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>is the outlier, with a 23% drop from Friday to Saturday. So, to catch this record,\u00a0Endgame\u00a0<\/em>will either must vastly outperform\u00a0The Force Awakens\u00a0<\/em>on Friday or merely get close but fall less on the second day. Both are possible.<\/p>\n

Biggest Sunday gross:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The three biggest Sunday grosses are\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>($69.2 million),\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens\u00a0<\/em>($60.553 million) and\u00a0Black Panther\u00a0<\/em>($60.067 million).\u00a0The Force Awakens\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Age of Ultron\u00a0<\/em>dropped 11% on Sunday from Saturday, while\u00a0Black Panther\u00a0<\/em>fell just 9%. Both films benefited from the next Monday being a holiday.\u00a0Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>didn\u2019t have that advantage, but its 16% Saturday-to-Sunday drop was about in line with the 18% drops of\u00a0The Avengers\u00a0<\/em>(early May) and\u00a0Jurassic World\u00a0<\/em>(mid-June). The key to\u00a0The Avengers<\/em>\u2019 huge success was that it was so buzzy and well-liked that it legged it like a mid-summer release while school was still in session.\u00a0Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>played closer to\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2\u00a0<\/em>in terms of multipliers, and the deluge of post-debut competition may blunt\u00a0Endgame<\/em>\u2019s legs. But if it opens big enough, that may be mere trivia.<\/p>\n

Biggest opening weekend:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the grand prize: Can\u00a0Avengers: Endgame\u00a0<\/em>surpass the $258 million opening weekend of\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War<\/em>? That would also put it just over the inflation-adjusted $257m debut of\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens\u00a0<\/em>($248 million in 2015). Up until 2015, the MCU summer kick-off movies pulled consistent over\/under 2.5x multipliers, but\u00a0Age of Ultron\u00a0<\/em>(2.27x),\u00a0Captain America: Civil War\u00a0<\/em>(2.38x) were frontloaded while\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2\u00a0<\/em>(2.61x) got things back to normal.\u00a0Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>pulled a decent 2.43x multiplier from its $106 million Friday.\u00a0For the record, if it only breaks the various above records by a little bit, then we\u2019re looking at a $58 million Thursday, a $126 million Friday (which would be a $68 million \u201cpure Friday), an $83 million Saturday and a $70 million Sunday. That would be a debut weekend of around $279 million.<\/p>\n

Biggest worldwide debut weekend:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War<\/em>,\u00a0Avengers: Endgame\u00a0<\/em>is opening this Friday in North America instead of next Friday. Aside from giving the MCU flick more space between itself and both\u00a0Detective Pikachu\u00a0<\/em>(May 10) and\u00a0Aladdin\u00a0<\/em>(May 24), Walt Disney wants the global debut record again. With China now opening this weekend along with the rest of the world, they are all-but-guaranteed to get it.<\/p>\n

As of now, the four $500 million+ worldwide openings are\u00a0Walt Disney\u2019s\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>($649 million), Universal\/Comcast Corp.\u2019s\u00a0Fate of the Furious\u00a0<\/em>($542 million), Disney\u2019s\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens\u00a0<\/em>($529 million) and Universal\u2019s\u00a0Jurassic World\u00a0<\/em>($525 million). With China now opening alongside the rest of the world this time (Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>opened with $191 million last year) and set to earn potentially ridiculous numbers (it\u2019s tracking at around $253 million in China and might out-open\u00a0Baahubali 2\u00a0<\/em>in India) globally. If it makes identical figures around the world\u00a0(including China)\u00a0as\u00a0Avengers 3<\/em>, we\u2019re looking at an $830 million global debut for\u00a0Avengers 4<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Yes, it could go a lot higher, like over $900 million, but we\u2019ll cross that bridge when the time comes. For the record,\u00a0Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>earned around 2.4645x its global launch ($2.048 billion).\u00a0For the \u201cHey, it could top\u00a0Avatar<\/em>!\u201d folks, it would have to maintain that multiplier despite potentially brutal competition with a global launch of at least $1.132 billion this weekend.\u00a0Titanic<\/em>\u2019s second-place slot ($2.1 billion, counting the reissues) may be in peril, but I don\u2019t think the gold medal is. Let\u2019s see if it can top $1 billion this weekend and then we\u2019ll talk about odds of it taking the grand prize. Besides, if\u00a0Endgame\u00a0<\/em>snatches the top-grosser title from James Cameron, he\u2019s just going to steal it right back with\u00a0Avatar 2\u00a0<\/em>next year.<\/p>\n
