{"id":609861,"date":"2019-04-24T22:57:23","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T22:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n<figure class=\"fff post-thumbnail\" itemprop=\"associatedMedia\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img class=\"post_layout_5_img\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghana-mma.com\/2019\/04\/Asiedu-Nketia-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"We had cause to reject 2016 ele"},"modified":"2019-04-24T22:57:23","modified_gmt":"2019-04-24T22:57:23","slug":"we-had-cause-to-reject-2016-election-results-but-didnt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/04\/24\/we-had-cause-to-reject-2016-election-results-but-didnt\/","title":{"rendered":"We had cause to reject 2016 election results but didn&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"fff post-thumbnail\" itemprop=\"associatedMedia\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"post_layout_5_img\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanamma.com\/2019\/04\/Asiedu-Nketia-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"We had cause to reject 2016 election results but didn\u2019t \u2013 Asiedu Nketia\"\/><span class=\"featured-image-caption\"><br \/>\nNDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia <\/span><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"mom-ads-wrap  \">\n<div class=\"mom-ads ads-layout-rotator ads-rotator-id-111\" style=\"width:728px; height:90px;\">\n<div class=\"mom-ads-inner\">\n<div class=\"mom-ad\" data-id=\"1236\" style=\"width:728px; height:90px; \">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"appear\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanamma.com\/2019\/04\/Say-yes-to-ads-Banner-728-X-90.jpg\" alt=\"Right Below Featured Image\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says there were reasonable grounds for his party to reject the results of the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<p>But he says the NDC decided not to in the name of preserving Ghana\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n<p>John Dramani Mahama conceded the election to Nana Akufo-Addo after he polled 44.4% to Nana Addo\u2019s 53.83% in what was the first election defeat by an incumbent president.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on<strong> Citi TV\u2019s Face to Face, <\/strong>the NDC General Secretary said: \u201cwe had every reason not to accept this result and to demand certain things but we decided to keep quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reminded that EC had said its systems for transmitting the results electronically had been tampered with\u00a0leading to a delay in the declaration.<\/p>\n<p>But the commission is yet to provide any clarity on the incident over two years from the election.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIf it were NPP, I\u2019m sure after that statement, even if Jesus Christ had descended, they wouldn\u2019t have accepted defeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite the NDC\u2019s misgivings, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the NDC was of the view that \u201cthis is Ghana and Ghana is bigger than everybody and the democratic credentials we have earned make all of us proud so let us concede and move along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Asiedu Nketia also noted that the NDC would have been unable to challenge the election regardless because it has not been gazetted.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe thought that there will be a review of the elections. 2016 \u00a0stands out as the only general election which has not been reviewed by the Electoral Commission and IPAC.
