The Greater Accra Regional Branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is demanding the dismissal of the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo, if he fails to resign over comments he made about\u00a0Aisha Huang, a Chinese national who was found to be openly engaged in illegal mining in the country.<\/p>\n
According to the NDC, the comments Osafo Maafo made at a recent town hall meeting in the United States to the effect that Aisha Huang did not face the law in Ghana for her activities because of the Sinohydro deal could be best be described as unfortunate.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Citi News<\/strong>, Greater Accra Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, Jerry Johnson says the comments are unpardonable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want the President to dismiss the Senior Minister if he fails to resign himself. If it were to be somewhere he would have been asked to resign\u2026What business does a Senior Minister have in making such unguarded comments\u2026What Osafo Maafo who was former MP and Minister for a number of times mean is that the laws in Ghana can apply to you and I but anybody from outside this country can flout the laws with impunity and go home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Jailing Aisha Huang wouldn\u2019t have solved Ghana\u2019s problems<\/strong><\/p>\n
The Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Maafo justified the government\u2019s decision to discontinue the prosecution of Aisha Huang<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n
According to him, jailing her in Ghana will not have solved the country\u2019s economic problems.<\/p>\n
He made the comments at the government\u2019s recent town hall meeting in the US in response to a question from a participant at the program who sought to know why the government deported the Chinese national instead of jailing her in accordance with Ghanaian laws.<\/p>\n
Osafo Maafo in his response stressed Ghana\u2019s diplomatic ties with China and the huge investments Chinese companies are making in developing the country\u2019s infrastructure, citing the $2 billion Sinohydro deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a very good relationship with China. Today, the main company that is helping develop the infrastructure system in Ghana is Sinohydro, it is a Chinese Company. It is the one that is going to help process our bauxite and provide about two billion dollars to us\u2026 So when there\u00a0are\u00a0these kinds\u00a0of arrangements, there are other things behind the scenes,\u201d the minister stressed.<\/p>\n
\u201cPutting that lady (Aisha Huang) in jail in Ghana is not going to solve your economic problems. It is not going to make you happy or me happy, that\u2019s not important, the most important thing is that she has been deported out of Ghana,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Aisha and four of her Chinese employees were arraigned on May 9, 2017, for engaging in illegal small-scale mining at Bepotenten in the Amansie Central District in the Ashanti Region.<\/p>\n
She was charged with three counts of undertaking small-scale mining operations, contrary to Section 99 (1) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703); providing mining support services without valid registration with the Minerals Commission, contrary to the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), and the illegal employment of foreign nationals, contrary to the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573).<\/p>\n
The other four accused persons were charged with disobedience of directives given by or under the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573).<\/p>\n
The state\u2019s decision to discontinue the case much later saw the court discharge the five accused persons.<\/p>\n
Aisha Huang and the four others were subsequently deported to China in what some Ghanaians said was a betrayal especially as the government vowed to deal with illegal miners whose actions had destroyed the country\u2019s land and water bodies.<\/p>\n
