Ernest Azutiga is UEW PRO<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\nThe University of Education, Winneba has responded to a call by its former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, to be reinstated.<\/p>\n
Prof Avoke is basing his reinstatement campaign on an Economic and Organize Crime Office (EOCO) report, which he says clears him of all breaches that led to his dismissal.<\/p>\n
But the school has a straight-forward response, \u201cIf there is a report [the EOCO report] and you see there is an advantage for you in the report, you take it to court for it to be enforced.\u201d<\/p>\n
Public Relations Officer of UEW, Ernest Azutiga, said Wednesday that the university\u2019s decision to remove Prof Avoke as Vice Chancellor followed a rigorous process set out by established rules and procedure.<\/p>\n
Mr Avoke\u2019s removal, despite the EOCO report \u201cwas based on [the university\u2019s Governing] Council\u2019s fact-finding Committee that looked into the issues at the time,\u201d defends Mr Azutiga on Pulse on Joy News channel on MultiTV.<\/p>\n
The Committee, he explained, found key breaches against Prof Avoke and other officers \u2013 an outcome that informed their dismissal at the time.<\/p>\n
\u201c[The Committee] cited them for breaches or misconduct and for which reason it ended in their dismissal,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
<\/b>Reinstatement campaign<\/p>\n
At a press encounter on Tuesday, Prof. Avoke requested UEW to allow him to complete his unexpired term \u2013 he had six months to the end of his tenure before he was sacked for alleged breaches.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll the allegations made against us have been proven to be untrue especially by the EOCO, a state organisation that investigated the said allegations,\u201d he told reporters in Accra. <\/p>\n
The Governing Council of the University Education, Winneba in August 2018 dismissed Professor Avoke and four other principal officers of the university after the fact-finding committee found them guilty of procurement infractions.<\/p>\n
The said irregularities had to do with monies paid to contractors who were working on the North Campus roads.<\/p>\n
Prof Avoke maintained his innocence.<\/p>\n
This position by Prof Avoke has been reinforced by the findings of a leaked report by EOCO which looked into the matter.<\/p>\n
The anti-graft agency found among other things, that Prof Avoke did not abuse his office, neither did he breach any procurement laws as alleged.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe injustice in dismissing staff who have served the university over the past several years, on trumped up charges, evidenced in the so-called Fact Finding Report is probably the greatest injustice in the history of higher education anywhere in the civilized world,\u201d Prof Avoke said.<\/p>\n
The University of Education, Winneba has persistently been in the news since last year as a fight for management of the university intensified.<\/p>\n
On March 14, 2019, the Central Regional Security Council closed it down following a violent student demonstration.<\/p>\n
The demonstration was occasioned by a decision of the Governing Council on March 7, 2019, to institute disciplinary actions against three lecturers after what it claimed were adverse findings against them.<\/p>\n
This led the minority in Parliament to wade in, calling for the removal of the Council Chairman and Vice Chancellor of the University, blaming them for the woes of the university.<\/p>\n
The statement, issued Friday, said Vice Chancellor, Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni and the Council Chair, Associate Prof. Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah had not only failed to manage the University but their present positions remained the greatest obstacle to the resolution of the UEW impasse.<\/p>\n
Subsequently, the Council reversed its position, reinstating the three lecturers.<\/p>\n
On Prof Avoke however, UEW says its decision stands.<\/p>\n
\u201cUEW never made a formal complaint to EOCO. As it stands now we haven\u2019t even sighted a copy of the report. I don\u2019t know of any law that invalidates a committee\u2019s report because EOCO has come out with a different report,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
