{"id":607819,"date":"2019-04-16T23:57:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T23:57:56","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to President Akufo-Addo, the Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill, which is currently before Parliament, when passed, should deal effectively with the worrying phenomenon of vigilantism not only in Sankore, but i"},"modified":"2019-04-16T23:57:56","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T23:57:56","slug":"politically-motivated-violence-in-sankore-wont-happen-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/04\/16\/politically-motivated-violence-in-sankore-wont-happen-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Politically motivated violence in Sankore won&#8217;t happen again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to President Akufo-Addo, the Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill, which is currently before Parliament, when passed, should deal effectively with the worrying phenomenon of vigilantism not only in Sankore, but in all parts of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Bill, when passed, will ensure that \u201c<\/span>not only the people who are inciting the violence will be punished, but also the powerful people behind them will face the full extent of the law.<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The President stressed that \u201c<\/span>Once Parliament passes this bill, everyone involved in vigilantism will face the law<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>whether you are a Minister, Regional Minister, MP or not, once you are implicated, you will be prosecuted.<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">President Akufo-Addo made this known on Friday, 12th April, 2019, at a durbar of the Chiefs and people of Sankore, at the commencement of a 2-day tour of the newly created Ahafo Region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Expressing his disgust at the spate of po<\/span>litically motivated violence<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0in Sankore, he indicated that \u201ct<\/span>his cycle of violence taking place in Sankore ends today.<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He assured residents that, as opposed to what happened in the run-up to the 2016 elections, where Sankore became a hotbed for clashes and attacks on residents, \u201c<\/span>in the 2020 elections, I give you my personal promise<span lang=\"EN-US\">,\u00a0<\/span>it will not happen here in Sankore.<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">President Akufo-Addo added that persons who resort to the use of violence to win an election are, automatically,\u00a0<\/span>not the people\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201c<\/span>If you are, then there is no need to intimidate people into voting for you. The people themselves will rally together to vote for you. That is what we want to see here in Ghana<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>peaceful, free elections. If you are going to rely on violence and bloodshed, then it would appear that you are not the one the people want. I repeat, this will not happen again<span lang=\"EN-US\">,\u201d he said<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The President continued, \u201c<\/span>We are not going to allow Ghanaian politics, Ghanaian democracy<span lang=\"EN-US\">,<\/span>\u00a0to be compromised by these acts of violence and thuggery. It will not happen again. Since October (2018), we have not heard any news of political violence<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0in Sankore<\/span>. We will continue to monitor the situation.
