{"id":607460,"date":"2019-04-13T02:59:36","date_gmt":"2019-04-13T02:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">General News of Friday, 12 April 2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>atinkaonline.com<\/p>\n2019-04-12\n\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghana-mma.com\/2019\/03\/273707"},"modified":"2019-04-13T02:59:36","modified_gmt":"2019-04-13T02:59:36","slug":"cycle-of-political-violence-vigilantism-in-sankore-should-end-now-akufo-addo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/04\/13\/cycle-of-political-violence-vigilantism-in-sankore-should-end-now-akufo-addo\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycle of political violence, vigilantism in Sankore should end now \u2013 Akufo Addo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">General News of Friday, 12 April 2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>atinkaonline.com<\/p>\n<p>2019-04-12<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanamma.com\/2019\/03\/27370720.295.jpg\" alt=\"President Akufo Addo In Sad Mood\" title=\"President Akufo Addo In Sad Mood\" width=\"295\" height=\"184\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\"> The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has declared that the cycle of politically related acts of violence and vigilantism that occurred in Sankore, in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Ahafo Region, will sonn come to an end.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill, which is currently before Parliament, when passed, will deal effectively with the worrying phenomenon of vigilantism, not only in Sankore, but in all parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>He made the declaration on Friday, 12th April, 2019, at a durbar of the Chiefs and people of Sankore, at the commencement of a 2-day tour of the newly created Ahafo Region.<\/p>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo, also said that the Bill, when passed, will ensure that not only the people who incited violence will be punished, but also, the powerful people behind them will face the full extent of the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce Parliament passes this bill, everyone involved in vigilantism will face the law \u2013 whether you are a Minister, Regional Minister, MP or not, once you are implicated, you will be prosecuted,\u201d he said. Expressing his disgust at the spate of politically motivated violence in Sankore, the President stated that, \u201cthis cycle of violence taking place in Sankore ends today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, he assured residents that, as opposed to what happened in the run-up to the 2016 elections, where Sankore became a hotbed for clashes and attacks on residents, \u201cin the 2020 elections, I give you my personal promise, it will not happen here in Sankore.\u201d President Akufo-Addo, however, added that persons who resort to the use of violence to win an election are, automatically, not the people\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are, then there is no need to intimidate people into voting for you. The people themselves will rally together to vote for you. That is what we want to see here in Ghana \u2013 peaceful, free elections. If you are going to rely on violence and bloodshed, then it would appear that you are not the one the people want. I repeat, this will not happen again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He continued that, \u201cWe are not going to allow Ghanaian politics, Ghanaian democracy, to be compromised by these acts of violence and thuggery. It will not happen again. Since October (2018), we have not heard any news of political violence in Sankore. We will continue to monitor the situation.
