{"id":607074,"date":"2019-04-11T19:27:12","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T19:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">General News of Thursday, 11 April 2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>3news.com <\/p>\n2019-04-11\n\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghana-mma.com\/2019\/03\/52365826.2"},"modified":"2019-04-11T19:27:12","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T19:27:12","slug":"ag-lays-political-vigilantism-bill-in-parliament-likely-to-be-passed-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/04\/11\/ag-lays-political-vigilantism-bill-in-parliament-likely-to-be-passed-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"AG lays political vigilantism bill in parliament, likely to be passed Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">General News of Thursday, 11 April 2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>3news.com <\/p>\n<p>2019-04-11<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanamma.com\/2019\/03\/52365826.295.jpg\" alt=\"Parliament Of Ghana Cc\" title=\"Parliament Of Ghana Cc\" width=\"295\" height=\"181\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>The AG has asked Parliament to urgently approve the \u201cvigilantism and related offences bill 2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\">Ghana\u2019s Attorney General (AG) Gloria Afua Akuffo presented before parliament a new bill seeking to criminalise and disband all forms of political vigilantism in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The AG is asking the parliamentarians to under a certificate of urgency, approve the \u201cvigilantism and related offences bill 2019\u201d that the government intends to use to end acts of violence perpetuated under the guise of vigilantism.<\/p>\n<p>An attempt by the minority leader Haruna Iddrisu to block the laying of the bill by the AG on the grounds of it not being gazetted as required by law was shot down by the Speaker Mike Ocquaye.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting the standing orders of the House and article 106 of the constitution, Mr Iddrisu argued the bill ought to have been \u201cgazetted at least 14 days before the date of its introduction in parliament,\u201d but added \u201cI do not see any gazette indication\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said inasmuch as they support the bill, they will not compromise on the laws of the land.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand the president is in a hurry to deal with it [the bill]. We think there must be multi stakeholder consultation.
