Ghana exited the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme without achieving its objectives, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo has said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Adongo said this while commenting on Ghana\u2019s current economic challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe country you left that was in safe hands is about to enter the international lottery. The country at this point in time is on cross roads. We are confronted with a very severe fiscal environment that is creating a quagmire for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe IMF at a point got fed up with us. We had come to a point where we have left the IMF without achieving the objectives of the IMF programme. As a matter of fact the IMF at a point got tired of us \u2026 The risk of it all is that the managers of the economy do not seem to know where we are and that is a bigger problem,\u201d Mr. Adongo said at the party\u2019s public lecture.<\/p>\n

In view of these challenges, Mr. Adongo expressed the hope that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will return to save Ghana \u201cfrom the mess.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also urged the government to implement the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n

The NDC\u2019s lecture comes on the back of the Government\u2019s Economic Management team\u2019s town hall meeting held on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Ghana has officially exited the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.<\/p>\n

The Vice President, Mohamadu Bawumia said Ghana officially exited the IMF\u2019s extended credit facility arrangement on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026It was only on Tuesday that Ghana formally and successfully completed the IMF programme that we inherited in 2017,\u201d he said at a town hall meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Ghana entered a US$925.9 million three-year arrangement with the IMF in April 2015 following issues with the economy.<\/p>\n

It was extended for an additional year on August 30, 2017.<\/p>\n

The final tranche of the payment hit government accounts on March 29, 2019.<\/p>\n

The arrangement was aimed at restoring Ghana\u2019s debt sustainability and macroeconomic stability to foster a return to high growth and job creation while protecting social spending.<\/p>\n

During the programme implementation, there was a freeze on employment into government departments except for those under education and health.<\/p>\n

\u2018Let Mahama\u2019s IMF deal be the last\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

President Nana Akufo-Addo had expressed hope that this IMF deal would be the last in the history of Ghana.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I am saying to Ghanaians, to all of us, is that, in the 62 years of our independence, this was the 16th IMF bailout programme that the nation had gone into. Let it be the last time that we would resort to an IMF programme.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Akufo-Addo assured that \u201cfrom now on, we are going to maintain the discipline in the management of our public finances so that we will never have to have recourse to an IMF bailout programme again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
