The Food and Beverage Association\u00a0of Ghana (FABAG)\u00a0has called on beverage producers to be part of the responsibility of ridding towns and cities of plastic waste so as to attain the vision of becoming the cleanest city in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Association is making the call as part of their support towards the Ghana\u00a0Beverage\u00a0Awards\u00a0(GBA) organized by Global Media Alliance. The Award scheme\u00a0seeks to\u00a0honour\u00a0beverage companies excelling in their various specialities.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Speaking on the country\u2019s current sanitary conditions, Executive Secretary of FABAG, Samuel Aggrey\u00a0said, \u201cAlthough the sanitary conditions in\u00a0Ghana are a result of attitudinal problems and inadequate waste collection avenues, it is high time beverage producers took up the responsibility of making Ghana clean. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMany of our beverages are contained in plastic bottles, sachets, cans and other non-biodegradable containers\u00a0which end up on our streets when consumers exhaust their contents.\u00a0We,\u00a0as beverage producers should demonstrate passion in getting our brands off the streets and gutters just as we would when selling them fresh off the counter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He acknowledged the effort of the\u00a0Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises (GRIPE)\u00a0and the key role the beverage industry\u00a0also\u00a0has in controlling the plastics menace. <\/span><\/p>\n

GRIPE is an industry-led initiative under the auspices of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and currently has Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana, Dow Chemical West Africa Limited, Fan Milk Ghana Limited, Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited, Nestl\u00e9 Ghana, PZ Cussons Ghana Limited, Unilever Ghana and Voltic (GH) Limited, as founding members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The coalition, among others, seeks to integrate sustainable waste management solutions, advocate improved waste management practices, contribute to increased collection and recycling rates countrywide, and provide employment opportunities through scalable recycling solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe sanitation task is an enormous one and\u00a0we have a fast-growing\u00a0beverage industry too which means our sanitation challenge may only get bigger. So, if we can work together as beverage producers to supply bins, do clean up exercises and brand ourselves as\u00a0organisations\u00a0for a safer environment, we can get far with this campaign. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cSome\u00a0organisations\u00a0have taken the leap with the GRIPE campaign and I must commend them for that. Lets now take our place in the fight as the beverage industry. I\u2019d also like to call on all consumers of various products to be supportive of this initiative,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

FABAG is a registered legal entity since October 2004 under the\u00a0companies\u2019\u00a0code 1963 (Act 179) as a limited guarantee\u00a0organisation\u00a0under the laws of Ghana. <\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0organisation represents the interest of\u00a0manufacturers,\u00a0wholesalers, retailers, exporters\u00a0and importers of food and beverages across the country. <\/span><\/p>\n

The group lobbies, advocates, negotiates and communicates the views of their members in relation to specific government policies affecting their business so as to create an enabling environment for businesses in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n
