Xiao Wang was only 17 years old when he
\ndecided to sell one of his kidneys in order to buy the iPhone 4 he couldn\u2019t
\notherwise afford. <\/p>\n

After the operation Wang was told he was
\ngoing to have a normal life with just one kidney, but almost eight years on,
\nthe 24-year-old is permanently disabled and dependent on dialysis.<\/p>\n

Back in 2011, the iPhone 4 was Apple\u2019s
\nflagship smartphone and a status symbol at Xiao Wang\u2019s school in Chengzhou,
\nChina.<\/p>\n

\u00a0However, he came from a poor family who
\ncouldn\u2019t afford to buy him the trendy gadget, so he decided to sell one of his
\nhealthy organs in order to get his hands on enough money to buy the coveted
\ndevice. <\/p>\n

With help from a middleman, Wang got in
\ntouch with shady characters that specialized in trading organs on the black
\nmarket and agreed to sell one of his kidneys for 22,000 yuan ($3,200), more
\nthan enough to buy the iPhone 4 he so badly desired. Unfortunately, this
\nfoolish decision would completely ruin his life.<\/p>\n

The 17-year-old figured that he only needed
\none of his kidneys to survive and the dubious doctor he met before the
\noperation confirmed that he would be able to lead a normal life with just one
\nof his organs. <\/p>\n

The procedure was carried out in an illegal
\nhospital in Chenzou, and even though it was considered a success at the time,
\nhealth complications arose soon after.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, the operating environment
\nwasn\u2019t sanitized properly, which led to an infection on his wound,\u201d Oriental
\nDaily recently reported. \u201cWorse still, Wang\u2019s family were kept in the dark
\nabout his kidney removal operation and only found out about it when the teen
\ncouldn\u2019t hide his health problems any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because he didn\u2019t dare tell his parents
\nwhat he had done (and what for), the infection spread to his remaining kidney,
\nand by the time his family took him to a proper hospital for treatment, the
\ndamage to his kidney was so severe that the only possible way to ensure his
\nsurvival was permanent dialysis. <\/p>\n

Xiao Wang has spent most of his life since
\nthen in bed, dependent on the dialysis machine that\u2019s keeping him alive but at
\nthe same time greatly shortening his life-span.<\/p>\n

After hearing Wang\u2019s story about how he
\nsold his kidney on the black market to buy an iPhone 4, his parents tracked
\ndown and sued the middleman and the doctor who performed the operation. They
\neventually received a sizable compensation of 2.2 million yuan ($320,000) most
\nof which has been spent on the 24-year-old\u2019s expensive treatments and drugs.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear if Xiao Wang ever got to buy
\nthat iPhone he traded his kidney for, or if he still has it. Not that any of
\nthat matters, anyway. I guess the moral of the story is that very few things
\nare worth risking your life for, and an Apple iPhone is definitely not on the
\nlist.<\/p>\n
