Amasaman (G/R), Dec.
9, GNA – Mr Richmond Kyei Baffour from Akotoshie has been adjudged the Overall
Best Farmer for Ga West Municipality of the 2019 Farmers Day celebration at
Adjen Kotoku, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region.

He received a
tricycle, knapsack spraying machine, fridge, wellington boots and
agro-chemicals as his award.

Mr Clement Nii
Lamptey Wilkson, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in an address said there
was the need to link small-scale agriculture to ready market to help boost
agri-business in the country.

He said this could
be realised through public-private partnerships, increased public investments
in research and extension systems and development-oriented local governance.

Mr Wilkson said the
government’s vision was to change the phase of agriculture from subsistence
level, slow growth, low productivity, weak financial support, and high
post-harvest losses into a technology and agri-business driven.

He said this would
make agriculture more lucrative and provide sustainable avenue for employment
and investment to Ghanaians.

The MCE said in view
of this, the government rolled out many interventions through the Metropolitan,
Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), which served as a vehicle to support
small-scale farmers to increase food production, productivity and
agri-business.

He mentioned the
programmes as Planting for Food and Jobs, Rearing for Food and Jobs, and Planting
for Export and Rural Development.

He said under the
Planting for Food and Jobs 285 farmers in the municipality benefited from the
programme and were promoting growth in food production and job creation, while
the Department of Agriculture distributed 642 cockerels to 109 small-scale
farmers for rearing.

He said the
Department through its annual budget raised and distributed 500 mango seedlings
under the Planting for Export and Rural Development.

Madam Angelina
Owusua Ansah, the Municipal Agricultural Director said the Department would
continue to give farmers education to increase food production and to create
jobs, especially for the youth.
