Sege (GAR) Dec. 07, GNA — Ada West District
has identified five sites to be developed into ponds and dams to sustained the
Planting for Food and Jobs flagship programme of the government.

This is to elevate poverty in the District,
increase agriculcultural productivity and also to create jobs for local
communities during off season periods.

In his presentation at the 2019 Farmers’ Day
celebration, Mr Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi, Ada West District Chief Executive, said
Ghana until 2017 used to import maize but had become a net exporter of the
grain since the advent of government flagship programmer, Planting for Food and
Jobs.

“It is worthy of note that a lot of
Ghanaian youth have equally invaded the farming sector and this decision taken
by them will push government’s agenda of a Ghana Beyond Aid.

To ensure that we sustain this planting for
food and jobs programme, the Ada West District has organized various
interventions. Our department of Agriculture in collaboration with the
University of Ghana, trained farmers within Caeser – Korpe zone in making
compost using local materials for soil fertility improvement, “he said.

He also disclosed that plans for the
rehabilitation of the district’s greenhouse, destroyed by a rainstorm was
underway and when done, the Agriculture Department would use it as a resource
centre for training the young especially, in vegetable farming.

He said the Rearing for Food and Jobs
campaign, another flagship programme which would run for a five (5) year
period, saying it intended to develop a competitive and more efficient
livestock industry that would increase domestic production, reduce importation
of animal products, contribute to employment creation and improve livelihoods
of livestock value chain actors.

“Fortunately for us we have a lot of
cattle and other livestock in abundance…….we have put measures in place to
establish a competitive livestock market such as that of Tulaku in Ashaiman and
Adaklu in the Volta Region.

Land has been acquired for the establishment
of the market and stakeholders consultation is ongoing to bring on board
various actors, “he said.
