03, GNA – The Director – General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor
Kwasi Opoku Amankwa, has urged corporate citizens to complement Government’s
investment inĀ Science, MathematicsĀ and Technology Education to accelerate
national development.
He said effective
Science Education would not only cure the ignorance of citizens about Science
but would also broaden their knowledge base and make the nation a scientific
and technological-oriented one.
Prof Opoku Amankwa
said this in a speech read on his behalf at the second edition of the Ghana
Science Olympiad Competition, organised for underserved second cycle school.

Okai, a Director at the Office of the Director – General, read the speech.
The GES, he said,
had prioritised the field of Science and Mathematics because it held the key to
solving environmental, health and other life transformation challenges.
The sustainable and
efficient utilisation of the rich natural resources also depended on the
appropriate application of Science.
It behoved all
stakeholders, therefore, to support the development of talents in the field to
ensure holistic development and prosperity for all citizens.
The Ghana Science
Olympiad (GSO) competition, which started in 2018, is a policy initiative of
the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service
(GES) under the Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP).
It aims at promoting the teaching and learning
of Science, Technology and Mathematics.
It also seeks to
equip students from underserved schools with critical thinking skills and
expose them to the practical aspects of Science and Mathematics to improve upon
their knowledge base for better academic performance.
TheĀ Swedru Senior High School from the Central
Region emerged winners with the Armed Forces SHS and Okomfo Anokye SHS, both
from the Ashanti Region, coming second and third, respectively.
Master Enoch Kwame
Atuahene of the Adventist SHS in Ashanti Region was also the overall Best
Student of the competition, with Rexford Tutu of Okomfo Anokye SHS and Robert
Owusu of Swesco, coming second and third respectively, in the individual
awards.
Ms Angela Amponsah
of the Armed Forces SHS was also adjudged the Best Female Student.
The Overall Best
School received the Minister of Education Award and took home a respiratory
model.
The first and second
runner ups were awarded with the Director Generalās Special Award.
Mr Solomon Darko Quarm, the District Chief
Executive of Gomoa East, commended the Ministry of Education, the GES and the
contestants for the good move.
In all, 454 students
selected from 227 schools from across the country participated in the
programme, held under the theme: āScience, Mathematics and Technology for
Accelerated Development.
