St. Michael’s School Complex wins WAPCo quiz competition

Kpone (GAR), Nov.
20, GNA – The St. Michael’s School Complex has won the maiden edition of the
West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) inter-schools quiz competition
held in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

Bridget Shinto Moya
and Christo Sey, JHS three pupils who represented the St. Michael’s School
Complex, maintained a strong lead in all five rounds of the competition and
obtained an impressive 30 points to beat the seven other contesting schools.

The other
participating schools included: Bright Basic School, Kpone Presby A and B,
Kpone Methodist A and B, Bright Basic School, Kpone Community Proprietary and
Haana KKMA Basic School, in a keenly contested competition. 

The quiz held over
the weekend, focused on Mathematics, Science, English, Social Studies, current
affairs and the operations of WAPCo.

Speaking in an
interview to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Willaim Osei-Owusu, Deputy Manager,
External Relations of WAPCo, said his outfit as part of its corporate social
responsibility collaborated with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to conduct
preliminary quizzes at the district level, out of which eight schools were
selected for the finals.

He said the essence
of the quiz was to contribute to quality education in operational communities,
enhance academic excellence and problem-solving abilities, boost their
confidence, and instill in them a spirit of healthy academic competition.

Whiles praising the
efforts of all competing schools, he said, education is vital to national
development and it is imperative for adequate support to be provided in the
educational sector through the provision of scholarships.

“Largely what we
have focused on in the last few years has been in the area of health, water and
sanitation and education, through the provision of scholarships to brilliant
but needed students at the basic, senior high and tertiary level since 2012” he
said.

He said in all its
seven operational communities in Ghana and three other countries, WAPCo aims at
establishing proactive corporation which advances healthy and long-term
relationships with communities through the implementation of sustainable
community development initiatives that impacts positively on the living standards
of people in the project affected communities.

Mr Isaac Asamoah,
Municipal Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, GES, commended WAPCo for the
initiative saying it is a great effort to improve the quality of education at
the basic level.

He said competition
is an eye opener which calls for stakeholders to step up efforts in providing
quality education in the district.

Mr Calib Fugah,
Director of Strategy of Desk Technology Limited, a science technology company,
which collaborated with WAPCo in organising the event, said his outfit seeks to
promote science and technology with the provision of science sets and training
of students and teachers at an affordable price.

The contestants were
presented Huawei electronic tablets, textbooks, mathematics and science application
sets and other learning materials.
