Some students in class on the bare floor writing
The Chief Executive of the Talensi District, Dr. Christopher Boatbil Someteima says that his outfit is working assiduously to end the lack of furniture syndrome in some basic schools in the district which compels pupils to sit on the bare floor for lessons.
According to him, it is worrying that some school pupils still sit on the floor for their lessons.
To him, this retards quality education and he has vowed to end the narrative by 2020.
Dr. Boatbil disclosed this at the Meet-the-Press series held in Tongo.
He said the assembly has manufactured a significant number of dual desks as part of efforts to end the furniture crisis in basic schools and renovated ripped off schools in the area to improve the delivery of quality education.
“We have distributed 600 pieces of dual desks to basic schools in the district that lack furniture and has awarded for the manufacture of 800 pieces of mono and dual desk furniture which is almost completed and will soon be handed over schools lacking furniture. Some of the schools that were ripped off have been renovated and handed over for use.”
“Again, under our administration, we have also renovated 14 basic schools that were ripped off by wind storms and handed over for use. Our aim is to ensure that by 2020, no school-going child in Talensi district should sit on the floor in the classroom for their lessons,” he said.
Touching on health, Dr. Boatbil said the assembly will soon award for the construction of CHPS compounds at Yagzore and Gaare and also complete the Yameriga CHPS compound to augment existing health facilities to improve service delivery in the area.
On roads, Dr. Boatbil said the government has fixed the Yagzore through to Namoglogo road linking the Nabdam district.
He also hinted that the Zoo-Yameriga-Sheaga-Duuri road will soon be worked on, to make it motorable for commuters.
Dr. Boatbil said government’s planting for food and jobs has tremendously transformed the lives of thousands of farmers through the subsidized inputs and fertilizer.
“We have over 1,400 farmers who have benefited from improved seeds and fertilizer and as a result, there is bumper harvest in Talensi. Food is in abundance,” he noted.
He further indicated that the construction of the 1,000 metric tons capacity district warehouse at Pusu-Namongo was 90% complete and when completed, will create jobs for the youth along the value chain and reduce exploitation of farmers during the harvest season.
Dr. Boatbil said the assembly has also liaised with World Vision Ghana to create two shea butter processing centers at Sheaga and Winkongo which has created jobs for hundreds of women in the area.
