The Member of Parliament for the Ododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye has criticised government’s handling of sanitation in the country.

Mr. Vanderpuye on Citi FM’s/TV’s Big Issue said Ghana’s insanitary condition is worsening under the current government due to the poor management of sanitation challenges.

“Ghana is sitting on a time bomb and all of us must take issues of environment and sanitation seriously, especially the government. This government has been very poor in the management of sanitation issues. The country is becoming more dirtier, filthy and also stinking by the day,” the MP complained.

Ghana is said to be losing about $290 million annually due to poor sanitation in the country.

The amount which is equivalent to $12 per person per year translates to 1.6% of the country’s GDP.

A report by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015 also ranked Ghana the seventh dirtiest country in the world.

The report said 7,500 children die annually in Ghana from diarrhoea that is linked to unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation.

President Akufo-Addo had earlier promised to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of his term in 2020.

But Ghanaians may not see this dream come through anytime soon as the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah recently extended the timeline from 2020 to 2024.

“In sha Allah, the president would go for two terms and at the end, Accra would have been the cleanest and the battle is still the Lord’s.”
