The Public Relations officer for the Sierra Leoneian Sports Ministry has revealed why experienced Ghanaian coach, Sellas Tetteh was rejected as the coach of the Senior National side.

According to Eric Fomba, the Sierra Leoneian Football Association (SLFA) took the decision contrary to the agreement to sign a local coach to head the Sierra Leoneian National team.

Fomba disclosed in an interview with Happy FM that government opted for a local coach due to the countries financial hardships which makes them incapable of acquiring the services of a foreign coach.

Despite the unfortunate distress, the PR hailed the qualities Sellas Tetteh as the coach who nearly qualified Sierra Leone to the AFCON.

“Sierra Leone is aware that coach Sellas Tetteh is unarguably one of best coaches. He is a good and fantastic coach who nearly qualified us to the AFCON in Ivory Coast,” Fomba told Accra based Happy FM on Thursday.

He however maintained that though the SLFA are mandated to appoint a coach it’s the duty of the Sports Ministry to give an approval since they hold the financial power.

Fomba said, ” The fact is, article 13 gives the Football Association the mandate to appoint a football coach but when the main order is done they have to present it to the Sports Ministry for approval. The reason is the Sports Ministry through the government will be paying salaries and accommodation services to the coach.

“Considering the fact that Sierra Leone is a very poor country therefore the FA are not in a good position to pay the coach, his technical coaches and other facilities. The government does not want to have the services of a foreign coach at this particular moment,” Fomba concluded.

The U-20 World Cup winner was announced as head coach of the Sierra Leoneian National team by the SLFA on Tuesday but on Wednesday the government revoked the appointment citing breaches from the SLFA.
