Hello good evening, and welcome to ISTANBUL!
There’s a European trophy up for grabs and two old Premier League rivals are going head-to-head. What’s not to like?
Champions League winners Liverpool take on Europa League champions Chelsea in a mouthwatering tie in Istanbul.
It’s a welcome return to Istanbul for Liverpool 14 years after they lifted the Champions League final down the road at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, but it’s the Vodafone Park, home of Besiktas, which will host them and Chelsea tonight.
Interestingly, Besiktas did make the Ataturk their temporary home for a few years while their new stadium was built, and moved into Vodafone Park back in 2016. It’s a 41,188-seater stadium on the Bosporous Strait and right next to the local Ritz!
For the very first time in the UEFA Super Cup’s 47-year history, two English teams will go head-to-head in the European curtain raiser, some 2,000 miles from home in one of the continent’s furthest-flung reaches.
So the bragging rights will be a little higher between these two old foes than in some iterations of this tournament – but sandwiched between the opening two weekends of the Premier League season, can it live up to expectation?
Hopefully it does. Stay with us for all the updates.
