‘41% Of Ghanaians Have Mental Disorders’

According to the CEO of the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Akwasi Osei, 41% of Ghanaians have mental disorders.

He was reported to have quoted that the percentage of Ghanaians who have mental problems is very alarming.

He buttressed his point using a survey conducted by a group of scholars from Yale University in the USA and the University of Ghana, Legon.

He indicated that this has really caused a loss of productivity that amounts to almost 7% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product ( GDP).

Using the research as a yardstick, he noted that mental health is something that needs to be taken seriously in the country.

Emphasizing on the need to take the issue seriously, he further disclosed that mental health problems threatened security in the sense that people suffering from such problems sometimes became violent and attacked others.
