Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon
(UNIFIL) has been successfully transferred from GHANBATT 85 to GHANBATT 86 at a
Taking over of Authority Parade held at the GHANBATT Headquarters in AL-QAWZAH,
South Lebanon on Tuesday July 2019.
The parade saw the passing on of command
from the Out-going Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Fiifi Deegbe to the
Incoming Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Abass Atuluk.
The Sector West Commander, Brigadier General
Bruno Pisciotta, who was also the Guest of Honour, symbolically passed the UN
flag from the out-going to the incoming commander.
In his speech, the Outgoing Commanding
Officer expressed gratitude to the Officers, Men and Women of GHANBATT 85 for
their professionalism and dedication to the peace efforts in Southern Lebanon.
He welcomed the Incoming Commanding Officer
and wished him a successful tenure.
Lt Col Fiifi Deegbe was presented with a
peace medal by Brigadier General Saikaly on behalf of the Lebanese Armed Forces
for the contributions of his Battalion to the peace process in Lebanon.
Brigadier General Bruno Pisciotta expressed
his satisfaction with the results of the activities of GHANBATT 85 during their
one-year tour of duty in Lebanon, particularly along the Blue Line.
He described the Outgoing Commanding Officer
as a charismatic and enthusiastic leader, who should be proud of his men and
what they have achieved together.
Also present at the ceremony were Ghana’s
Honourary Counsel to Lebanon, Michel Haddad, Ghanaian Contingent Commander
Colonel John Lawluvi, Commanders of the various battalions in the mission as
well as staff officers of UNIFIL and some Mayors and Muktars.
The 2 Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Army
forms the nucleus of UNIFIL GHANBATT 86 who will serve a one-year tour in South
