Cocoa farmers at Otsenkorang in the Agona West Municipality, whose farms were destroyed to make way for an oil palm plantation, will soon be paid compensation.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Marigold Assan said she had commenced talks with management of the company to ensure farmers get adequate compensation.
“I’m distraught about the incident because they didn’t inform me before cutting down the cocoa trees,” she stated on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Monday.
Farmers in a number of communities recently agitated over the destruction of their farms by a company to pave way for a One-District-One-Factory project.
Though the company claimed it had paid compensation to all the affected farmers, the Agona West MCE said the offer was woefully inadequate.
“A farmer claims he was given GH?1,000.00 for his four-acre cocoa farm, it is not enough,” she bemoaned.
As an immediate measure, Madam Assan said she will meet with the aggrieved farmers and all key stakeholders to settle the case amicably.
