Member of Parliament for the Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak has launched a scathing attack on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he says is its lack of concern about the two gory accident that occurred on Friday.
He says President Nana Akufo-Addo’s loud silence means his ‘lack of leadership’ and mismanagement of the situation.
Nearly 100 passengers were involved in an accident on the Techiman-Kintampo stretch and another in Ekumfi Dunkwa on the Cape Coast stretch on Friday.
About 70 people died as a result of the accident.
In a post on Facebook, the legislator lashed out at government for failing to assist the victims or ‘declare a day of mourning’.
“To say that I am utterly disappointed by the government’s response to Friday’s tragic accidents is an understatement. The government’s response is nothing but shambolic. More than 70 of our compatriots have died in very tragic road accidents in just one day. No package of support for the victims, no declaration of a day of mourning, and unlike other disasters in the past, no visit to either the hospital or the mass burial today by any minister of state. In times of such tragic disasters, we expect leadership. What the President has demonstrated is no leadership, just vacuum.”
Whilst expressing commiserations to the bereaved families, Ras Mubarak also accused government of ‘sleeping on the job.’
“Once again my deepest condolences to the friends and families of the victims, and to the MP for Garu, Albert Alalzuuga, who has demonstrated commitment and leadership. Many of the victims were his constituents. He’s still in the area of the accident visiting the victims and picking up bills while the President and his government sleep on the job.
Black and deadly Friday
On Friday, March 22 2019, Over 60 passengers died in an accident involving two buses on the Techiman-Kintampo road.
On the same day, 10 persons were confirmed dead, with several others injured in an accident that occurred at Ekumfi Dunkwa on the Winneba-Cape Coast Highway.
An eyewitness, who spoke to Citi News, explained that the Yutong bus driver with registration number GN 4368 –14, made a wrongful overtaking and collided head-on with the Metro Mass bus with registration number AS 2951-10.
The Mankesim Divisional Police Commander, ACP Owuahen Agyei Acheampong, explained that 10 individuals lost their lives including drivers of both cars, while many were in critical conditions.
Road accidents: ‘Gov’t must make our roads safer’ – Mahama
Former President John Dramani Mahama after news broke about the accident extended his condolence to families of persons who lost their lives in the two accidents.
Mr. Mahama in a tweet called on various stakeholders including the DVLA and Police to devise measures that will ensure that roads in the country are “safer.”
“I have received confirmation of two horrific accidents at Kintampo and Ekumfi Dunkwa, reported to have claimed many lives. Another sad day for our dear country. Our roads are becoming killing fields and road safety continues to be a major challenge,” the former President said in his tweet.
