Deputy Western Regional Minister, Gifty Eugenia Kusi
Gifty Eugenia Kusi, the Deputy Western Regional Minister, has said it is time for society to stop denigrating women who are successful in life.
She said women are are equal to men and should be given equal opportunities at all times.
The Deputy Regional Minister said this at the International Women Day celebration which was held at the Ahantaman Girl’s senior high school in the Western Region.
Mr Kusi said girls in schools should be encouraged to study science, mathematics, engineering and others courses that are considered as male dominated areas.
The day organized in collaboration with the Canadian High Commission was to empower young girls and boys in JHS and SHS in the Western Region to expand their horizons towards careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM ).
The event was in a form of a career fair showcasing women role models in STEM which permitted young girls and boys, parents as well as guardians to interact and ask questions about career paths, opportunities and advantages of choosing a profession in STEM.
The careers that were showcased in an exhibition include those in mining, the armed forces and welding amongst other vocations.
Dr Heather Cameron, the Canadian High Commissioner, said the day was being celebrated in the Western Region to engage the numerous companies in the area to help empower young girls and women to join the job market.
Dr Comfort Asare, a representative of the Minister for Women and Gender, urged students to believe in themselves, concentrate on their studies and avoid situations that would bring them problems in future.
She also advised teachers to develop cordial relationships with their students in order for them to easily approach them when the need arises.
Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhene of Essikado Traditional Area, urged parents to encourage their girl child to make their own career choices and avoid restricting them to household chores.
He reminded parents on the need to provide equal opportunities to their children when it comes to education.
Okyeame Kwame, a popular highlight artist, held a concert to convey messages from stakeholders on the importance of empowering boys and girls and the need to promote promote gender equality in the country.
