From the gruesome murders of two key persons in the country to the arrest of Menzgold Boss, Nana Appiah Mensah in Dubai, Newsfile this week’s edition of Newsfile saw key issues that shook the country come to light.
Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority, Josephine Asante and top member of Tiger Eye, Ahmed Hussein-Suale were both murdered Monday and Wednesday respectively in a similar fashion; by unknown assailants.
While Madam Asante was murdered by unknown gun men at her residence in Tema after she returned from a party for senior staff, Mr. Suale was shot in the chest and neck three times while driving on his way home Tuesday evening.
Then there was the arrest of the Menzgold Boss, Nana Appiah Mensah in Dubai, an action that was confirmed in a statement by the Ghana police service following the brouhaha about his inability to compensate his customers for monies he took from them.
The release of Former Ivorian President, Laurent Gbagbo from his 8-year jail term was also be highlighted on the show. The former Cote d’Ivoire leader was facing charges for crimes against humanity following the violence in the West African country suffered in the aftermath of the 2010 election. He was however acquitted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) after they ruled that he had no case to answer because the prosecution failed to prove the several charges against him.
Panelists also touched on the subject of a possible suit against some 35 mining companies in Ghana.
Two MPs, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini and Ernest Henry Norgbey, sued the said companies, the Attorney-General and the Minerals Commission in the country’s Supreme Court for allegedly violating the constitution by their actions.
In the action brought by the two MPs, they argue that all the 35 companies violated article 268 of the Ghanaian constitution by carrying on mining operations at a time when Parliament had not ratified their mining leases in accordance with article 268 of the constitution.
