{"id":469598,"date":"2018-03-04T04:37:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-04T04:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2018\/03\/04\/ghana-needs-practical-measures-to-slow-down-population-growth-dr-appiah\/"},"modified":"2018-03-04T04:37:40","modified_gmt":"2018-03-04T04:37:40","slug":"ghana-needs-practical-measures-to-slow-down-population-growth-dr-appiah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2018\/03\/04\/ghana-needs-practical-measures-to-slow-down-population-growth-dr-appiah\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana needs practical measures to slow down population growth \u2013 Dr Appiah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"medsection1\">\n<!-- End of html generated by this->header() --><\/p>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">General News of Sunday,  4 March 2018<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>ghananewsagency.org<\/p>\n<p>2018-03-04<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/18118842.295.jpg\" alt=\"Ghana Population\" title=\"Ghana Population\" width=\"295\" height=\"198\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>Ghana needs practical measures to help slow down the pace of population growth in the country<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"noPrint\">\n<div id=\"537626303\" style=\"width:300;height:250;margin:0;padding:0\">\n<p>\t\t  <noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" name=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/afr?auid=537626303&amp;cb=151125817929577\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"><a href=\"\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/rc?cs=b2ad7fa7fd&amp;cb=151125817929577\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1520138260_218_ai\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\"> Dr Leticia Adelaide Appiah, Executive Director of the National Population Council (NPC), has called for effective and practical measures to help slow down the pace of population growth in the country.<\/p>\n<p>She said the current population growth rate of 2.5 per cent was not only alarming, but also brought about a huge national economic burden and the decline of quality of life for the people.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Appiah was speaking at a day\u2019s workshop organized by the NPC for the students and staff of the Department of Public Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop, which was held under the theme: \u201cRapid population growth rate and the hidden socio-economic burden, the Ghanaian context\u201d, was aimed at sensitizing the students on the effect of rapid population growth on the Ghanaian economy and measures to adapt to curb it.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Appiah said there is the need for government to synchronize its policies to reflect on population growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne problem of our country is that, government does not synchronize its policies and until that issue is addressed, we will still face problems of improving the standards of life as a nation\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The NPC has over the years, attributed the reduction in services and income support for the poor; crowded educational and health facilities; declining educational and health standards and reduced productivity which is affecting the competitiveness of industries to the uncontrolled population growth rate in the country.<\/p>\n<p>It said the growth rate for a country to progress is 2 per cent and the current growth rate of 2.5 per cent, means Ghana\u2019s population will double in twenty-eight years, which is shorter that the useful lifespan of most of its natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>The country is, therefore, on the path of a developmental deficit.
