{"id":466508,"date":"2018-02-22T07:51:32","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T07:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2018\/02\/22\/law-students-to-petition-parliament-legal-council-over-mass-failure\/"},"modified":"2018-02-22T07:51:32","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T07:51:32","slug":"law-students-to-petition-parliament-legal-council-over-mass-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2018\/02\/22\/law-students-to-petition-parliament-legal-council-over-mass-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Law students to petition Parliament, Legal Council over mass failure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"medsection1\">\n<!-- End of html generated by this->header() --><\/p>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">General News of Thursday, 22 February 2018<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>citifmonline.com<\/p>\n<p>2018-02-22<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/79810655.295.jpg\" alt=\"Ghana Law School   \" title=\"Ghana Law School   \" width=\"295\" height=\"156\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>These petitions will follow reports that only 91 out of over 500 students passed in all 10 courses<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"noPrint\">\n<div id=\"537626303\" style=\"width:300;height:250;margin:0;padding:0\">\n<p>\t\t  <noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" name=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/afr?auid=537626303&amp;cb=151125817929577\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"><a href=\"\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/rc?cs=b2ad7fa7fd&amp;cb=151125817929577\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1519285892_329_ai\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\"> The Student\u2019s Representative Council [SRC] of the Ghana School of Law, will today [Thursday] present several petitions following the failure of over 80 percent of students in examinations taken in May 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament and the General Legal Council will be among the recipients of the petitions according to an SRC Vice-President, Lenin Anane Adjei.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Today] we are going to submit petitions to the General Legal Council, we will submit petitions to the Parliamentary Commission on Subsidiary Legislation and also petition the independent examination board in order to gain access to the marking scheme,\u201d he said on Eyewitness News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026and also we\u2019ll submit a petition for students who demand their scripts to be allowed to see their scripts since past experience with the IEB [Independent Examination Board] have shown that in situations where they have made such scripts available there were some errors in the tallying of marks,\u201d Mr. Adjei added.<\/p>\n<p>These petitions will follow reports that only 91 out of over 500 students passed in all 10 courses from the exams taken in May 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The students have since also questioned the credibility of the school\u2019s Independent Examination Board (IEB).<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>Unreasonable re-mark fee<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Adjei also expressed displeasure with the GHc 3,000 fee one has to pay for remarking.<\/p>\n<p>He insisted that it was not in the best interest of legal education in the country to charge 3,000 cedis for remarking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are saying that the GHc 3000 per script is a figure that is on the high side and students can simply not afford it; and so there should be a reduction in that price\u2026 we think that it is unconscionable to demand GHc 3000 per script in order to grant a remark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is in excess; telling us we cannot come for remarking at all because how many people living in the country see GHc 3,000 at the end of the year,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>Call for independent re-marking<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference on Wednesday, the students demanded that General Legal Council allow independent examiners to mark the law student\u2019s papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat re-marking, ideally, should be done within thirty days,\u201d Mr. Adjei, told Citi News.<\/p>\n<p>Though no ultimatum has been given the General Legal Council, Lenin Anane Adjei said it was imperative that the students\u2019 examination papers were given a second eye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they decided to re-mark and it is going beyond the thirty days, we do not have a problem, but the bottom line is that the General Legal Council should intervene and bring in independent examiners or give our scripts to people who are not part of the IEB.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that there will be a call to the bar in October 2018 so the student\u2019s concerns must be addressed before then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026The call in October demands that between now and somewhere in June or July, students should be able to have all these things remedied so that those who after going through the system would qualify, are called to the bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DzSy20XomHQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay;
