{"id":465315,"date":"2018-02-18T09:41:05","date_gmt":"2018-02-18T09:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2018\/02\/18\/government-to-set-up-ghc20m-fund-for-start-ups\/"},"modified":"2018-02-18T09:41:05","modified_gmt":"2018-02-18T09:41:05","slug":"government-to-set-up-ghc20m-fund-for-start-ups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2018\/02\/18\/government-to-set-up-ghc20m-fund-for-start-ups\/","title":{"rendered":"Government to set up GHC20m fund for start-ups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"medsection1\">\n<!-- End of html generated by this->header() --><\/p>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">Business News of Sunday, 18 February 2018<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>Graphic.com.gh <\/p>\n<p>2018-02-18<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/15042474.295.jpg\" alt=\"Mohammed Awal1\" title=\"Mohammed Awal1\" width=\"295\" height=\"143\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, Business Development Minister<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"noPrint\">\n<div id=\"537626303\" style=\"width:300;height:250;margin:0;padding:0\">\n<p>\t\t  <noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" name=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/afr?auid=537626303&amp;cb=151125817929577\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"><a href=\"\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/rc?cs=b2ad7fa7fd&amp;cb=151125817929577\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1518946864_682_ai\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\">The Minister of Business Development, Mr Mohamed Ibrahim Awal, has announced plans by the government to set up a special fund to support start-ups to get access to cheaper sources of funds.<\/p>\n<p>The fund, expected to have a seed capital of GH\u00a220 million, will be designed to provide financial support to young businesses at interest rates lower than what the commercial banks offer, the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Awal disclosed this last Thursday when he toured some job stations and hubs to groom Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Accra.<\/p>\n<p>He observed that the move was part of an initiative to enable start-ups to plough back their profits into their businesses, expand and create more jobs in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Although the government had seeded the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) with $10 million, he said the fund was not enough to meet the huge demands, hence the need for additional funding to support young businesses.<\/p>\n<p><b>Government engages stakeholders<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are discussing with stakeholders, including banks to help set up a special fund to support young businesses in the country,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the government was also encouraging stakeholders to provide the needed training and mentorship to young businesses throughout the value chain.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Awal said the deal was expected to be sealed by the end of March this year to pave way for the fund to be established to augment the initiatives already introduced by the government to support SMEs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, we want to skew the fund towards women with about 52 percent benefits to grow their businesses.
