Mynewsgh.com has learnt Ebony was so passionate about cervical cancer that she had created a yet-to-be-launched foundation, The Ebony Cervical Cancer Foundation, to bring awareness, prevention and cure to her teeming, youthful support base until she met her untimely death.<\/p>\n

Ebony, we learnt, had planned to use her influence on young girls to create awareness on Cervical Cancer and to encourage her supportive base to \u201cProtect their cervix\u201d because \u201cIt Matters\u201d, and to know and take the testing and treatment of the deadly cancer more seriously. She had created a foundation for it with a team in place to roll it out after March, we learnt.<\/p>\n

Cervical cancer is highly preventable but only with regular screening tests and appropriate follow-up care, which makes such a foundation timely and appropriate.<\/p>\n

It also can be cured when found early and treated.<\/p>\n

Cervical cancer is almost always caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccines are available to protect against the types of HPV that most often cause cervical cancer.<\/p>\n

In Ghana, it is estimated that each year, at least 3000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and at least 2000 women die from cervical cancer with the number on the increase as these figure are referenced to 2015.<\/p>\n

A research in June 2008- a time the cancer was not quite well-known as it freely wreaked havoc among women in Ghana- available on the Ghana Medical Journal on \u2018Cervical Human Papillomavirus Infection in Accra, Ghana\u2019 conducted by Drs AB Domfeh, EK Wiredu, AA Adjei , PFK Ayeh-Kumi , TK Adiku, Y Tettey , RK Gyasi, and HB Armah concluded that \u201ca high prevalence of HPV infection in some age groups of the largely polygamous Ghanaian female population as in other sub-Saharan African countries, and that the initiation of sexual intercourse before age 18 and illiteracy are associated with HPV infection.<\/p>\n

This has implications for extending the reach of formal education and for the design of adolescent-specific cervical cancer health educational programs in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Ebony\u2019s death, it remains to be seen what will become of a foundation that would have served a very important need in the lives of the many young women cheerfully singing away and inspired by Ebony\u2019s bangers \u2018Kupe\u2019, \u2018Date Your Father\u2019, \u2018Call it Poison\u2019, \u2018Sponsor\u2019, and Maame Hwe among others.<\/p>\n
