{"id":462218,"date":"2018-02-07T12:00:17","date_gmt":"2018-02-07T12:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2018\/02\/07\/central-bank-to-insure-deposits-at-all-banks\/"},"modified":"2018-02-07T12:00:17","modified_gmt":"2018-02-07T12:00:17","slug":"central-bank-to-insure-deposits-at-all-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2018\/02\/07\/central-bank-to-insure-deposits-at-all-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Bank to insure deposits at all banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"medsection1\">\n<!-- End of html generated by this->header() --><\/p>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">Business News of Wednesday,  7 February 2018<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>3news.com <\/p>\n<p>2018-02-07<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/10449402.295.jpg\" alt=\"BOG ERNEST ADDISON MPC\" title=\"BOG ERNEST ADDISON MPC\" width=\"295\" height=\"167\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>Dr. Ernest Addison, BoG Governor<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"noPrint\">\n<div id=\"537626303\" style=\"width:300;height:250;margin:0;padding:0\">\n<p>\t\t  <noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" name=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/afr?auid=537626303&amp;cb=151125813973067\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"><a href=\"\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/rc?cs=b2ad7fa7fd&amp;cb=151125813973067\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1518004817_886_ai\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\">It is expected that depositors\u2019 funds at the various banks will be insured in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>This is because the Ministry of Finance is preparing to lay before Parliament the Depositors\u2019 Insurance Bill for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr. Ernest Addison is optimistic this will increase confidence in the banking sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghana Depositors\u2019 Protection Act 2016 (Act 931) is expected to protect depositors from unforeseen circumstances that may result in loss of funds.<\/p>\n<p>The law follows a recent debacle that hit the microfinance sector resulting in customers of DKM Microfinance and God is Love Fun Club, among others, losing millions of Cedis, and the recent UT and Capital bank takeover.<\/p>\n<p>According to the law, depositors whose monies get locked up in financial institutions during crisis may receive between GH\u00a21,250 and GH\u00a26,250 in compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Addison is optimistic this will increase confidence in the banking sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the depositors\u2019 insurance to provide the added safety net to boost confidence in the sector and also essentially ensure the protection of deposits, especially small deposits,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>A financial lawyer, Seth Asante, advocated measures that will ensure the independence of the insurance corporation from the Bank of Ghana and other governmental agencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe depositors\u2019 corporation should be able to make its one decision away from the Bank of Ghana. That way it can decide who will be covered and who will not be covered. That should be the next measure the Central Bank will be thinking of,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<p>President of the Ghana Association of Bankers Alhassan Andani allayed fears the funds for the insurance will be deducted from deposits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s get it clear that, the insurance will not be deducted from the deposit.
