{"id":461134,"date":"2018-02-03T16:10:57","date_gmt":"2018-02-03T16:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2018\/02\/03\/custom-officers-urged-to-adhere-to-right-classification-of-goods\/"},"modified":"2018-02-03T16:10:57","modified_gmt":"2018-02-03T16:10:57","slug":"custom-officers-urged-to-adhere-to-right-classification-of-goods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2018\/02\/03\/custom-officers-urged-to-adhere-to-right-classification-of-goods\/","title":{"rendered":"Custom officers urged to adhere to right classification of goods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"medsection1\">\n<!-- End of html generated by this->header() --><\/p>\n<p class=\"floatLeft\">Business News of Saturday,  3 February 2018<\/p>\n<p class=\"floatRight\"><strong>Source: <\/strong>ghananewsagency.org<\/p>\n<p>2018-02-03<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-left\">\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/78964045.295.jpg\" alt=\"Customs Officers 22\" title=\"Customs Officers 22\" width=\"295\" height=\"160\" \/><span class=\"image_caption\"><span>The appeal was made at a staff sensitisation forum on Customs Act 2015 (Act 891)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"noPrint\">\n<div id=\"537626303\" style=\"width:300;height:250;margin:0;padding:0\">\n<p>\t\t  <noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" name=\"b2ad7fa7fd\" src=\"http:\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/afr?auid=537626303&amp;cb=151125813973067\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\"><a href=\"\/\/ghanaweb-d.openx.net\/w\/1.0\/rc?cs=b2ad7fa7fd&amp;cb=151125813973067\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1517674257_101_ai\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"clear:right\">Deputy Commissioner Board Secretariat Management Services of Ghana Revenue Authority has urged custom officers to pay detailed attention to ascertain the right classification of goods and services in order to generate more revenue.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Godwin Attor, said the issue of classification was core to the functions of custom officers, and so any wrong classification could result in generating and applying wrong duty rates.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nMr. Attor made the appeal during a staff sensitisation forum on Customs Act 2015 (Act 891) and Customs Regulation, LI2248 in Wa.<\/p>\n<p>The forum was meant for both custom officers and relevant stakeholders to have deeper understanding of Ghana\u2019s custom law and the way they worked.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nCustom officers were urged to be efficient with their job.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nThey were also cautioned that any officer who failed to classify an item right, commited an illegality and could be punished accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Attor said an offence against a provision in the custom law was criminal and that crime had no statute of limitation and the rules in the previous laws which were scattered had been re-organised in the current Act 891 to make it more effective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou realised that the current custom law, Custom Act 891 had made emphasis on risk management in the area of controls because customs will like to open up and importers will like to facilitate International Trade \u2013 so the risk management came in for us to do that facilitation and also to optimize revenue collections\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained, for instance, that Post Clearance Audit Unit as a control measure was to make sure that even after one had gone through clearance procedure;
