<\/div>\n<\/div>\nThe 68-year-old son of Cuba\u2019s former leader Fidel Castro has killed himself in Havana, according to Cuban state media.<\/p>\n
Fidel \u00c1ngel Castro D\u00edaz-Balart was found on Thursday morning and is said to have suffered from depression.<\/p>\n
The first-born son of the late president was nicknamed \u201cFidelito\u201d, or Little Fidel, because of the family resemblance.<\/p>\n
He was a nuclear physicist, trained by the former Soviet Union.<\/p>\n
\u201cFidel Castro D\u00edaz-Balart, who had been treated by a group of doctors for several months due to deep depression, took his life this morning,\u201d Cuba\u2019s official newspaper Granma reported \u2013 little more than a year after his father.<\/p>\n
State television said he had been receiving medical treatment as an outpatient in recent months, following a hospital stay.<\/p>\n
At the time of his death, he was a scientific adviser for the Cuban Council of State and he served as vice president of Cuba\u2019s Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n
He headed the island\u2019s nuclear programme from 1980 to 1992, before it was suspended after the Soviet Union\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n
He was married to Mar\u00eda Victoria Barreiro and had three children from his previous marriage \u2013 Fidel Antonio Castro Smirnov, Mirta Mar\u00eda Castro Smirnova and Jos\u00ad\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Castro Smirnov.<\/p>\n
Fidel Castro D\u00edaz-Balart was born in 1949, during his father\u2019s brief first marriage to Mirta D\u00edaz-Balart, the daughter of a prominent pre-revolution politician.<\/p>\n
His father went on to overthrow the US-backed dictator, Fulgencio Batista, in 1959 \u2013 when his mother\u2019s family fled the island and went to Florida.<\/p>\n
His parents divorced and \u201cFidelito\u201d spent some of his early years in the US before his father managed to bring him back to Cuba.<\/p>\n
This history explains why some of his close maternal relatives are among the most committed critics of the Cuban government \u2013 such as his cousin, Mario D\u00edaz-Balart, a US congressman.<\/p>\n
Fidelito himself was loyal to the ideals of the Cuban revolution, but was said in recent years to have grown weary \u2013 both of living in his father\u2019s shadow and having been sidelined from Cuban decision-making on energy resources, said reports.<\/p>\n
His ideas for developing renewable energy on the island were not incorporated into state policy, an academic colleague, Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado, told Reuters.<\/p>\n
\u201cI imagine that was disappointing for him,\u201d Mr Benjamin-Alvarado said.<\/p>\n
The TV announcement said his funeral would be planned by his family, but no further details were given.<\/p>\n
His father, Fidel Castro, a revolutionary figure and one of the world\u2019s longest serving political leaders, died aged 90 in 2016.<\/p>\n
