Chinese efforts to exert covert influence over the West are just as concerning as Russian subversion, the director of the CIA has said.<\/p>\n

Mike Pompeo told the BBC that the Chinese \u201chave a much bigger footprint\u201d to carry out such covert activities than the Russians do.<\/p>\n

He also said he expected Russia to target the 2018 US mid-term elections.<\/p>\n

The US intelligence community has said that it believes Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.<\/p>\n

Mike Pompeo was a hardline Republican congressman before President Donald Trump appointed him to the post of CIA director.<\/p>\n

He briefs the president most mornings and dismissed as \u201cdrivel\u201d recent claims in the book Fire and Fury that Mr Trump was not up to the job.<\/p>\n
