The Agona East District Assembly has established a seed bank to raise high yielding varieties of oil palm and coconut seedlings for farmers.
The two cash crops were selected by the Assembly to produce raw materials for factories under the “One District, One Factory” and to create jobs and wealth for the people in the area.
Mr Dennis Armah-Frempong, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, made this known when he addressed farmers, chiefs and stakeholders in agriculture at Nsaba in the Central Region.
“As a way of implementing this laudable initiative in the district, we in Agona East District Assembly selected oil palm and coconut out of the seven identified cash crops,” he said.
Mr Armah-Frempong appealed to the chiefs, assembly members and the farmers to encourage the youth to take agriculture as a full time venture to improve their living condition.
He said government has put in place mechanisms to address challenges militating against the development of agriculture such as; post-harvest loses and lack of credit facilities for farmers in the country.
The DCE called on the farmers to remain in constant touch with officials of the Department of Agriculture for technical advice to enhance their production.
Mr Armah-Frempong told the farmers that the government under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo would continue to pursue policies and programmes that would make agriculture very attractive to the youth in order to produce more for local consumption and for export.
