Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL), an Engineering and Construction Company in Accra has been named as the Best Environmental and Sanitation Company of the Year – 2018.

The award was bestowed on SSGL by the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) at the 7th AGI Ghana Industry & Quality Awards held at the Kempinski Hotel, Gold Coast City in Accra last Saturday.

The award was received by the Managing Director of SSGL, Mr. Said Haidar and the Business Development and Communications Manager of the company, Mrs. Lola Asiseh Ashitey

Speaking to the media shortly after the awards, Mrs. Ashitey said the achievement will boost the morale of the staff of the company.

“This incredible achievement would boost the morale of our highly spirited Staff to continually give their best in all aspects of operations to support our company’s objective of building similar and appropriate treatment plants in other parts of the country and beyond”.

She said attitudinal change was key to solve the sanitation problem in the city.

She explained that it has been proven and evidence had shown that the cleanest cities in the world came about as a result of people changing their attitude towards their environment, having known the health hazards that poor sanitation could bring to them.

She was therefore of the view that the dream of a clean Ghana is achievable only when every Ghanaian make conscious efforts to stop indiscriminate disposal of all forms of waste being it solid or liquid.

Background

SSGL has solved the over eleven-decade challenge of indiscriminate disposal of liquid wastes into the sea at the old lavender Hill in James Town-Accra.

The unbearable stench coupled with the ugly sight of vultures and flies feeding on the human excreta being discharged directly into the sea at a portion along the James Town- beach in Accra are no more.

Touching on the goals of SSGL, Mrs. Ashitey said the company focuses on the provision of efficient liquid waste treatment.

Since its establishment, the fully Ghanaian owned company has built two new faecal treatment plants (Lavender Hill Faecal Treatment Plant – Near the Korle Lagoon and the Kotoku Faecal Treatment Plant – Adjen Kotoku) and rehabilitated the Mudor Sewerage Treatment Plant also at James Town, she said.

She continued that SSGL also aims at giving Ghanaians the most effective, efficient and environmentally friendly way of liquid waste disposal and treatment.

Mrs. Ashitey said SSGL has capacity to design, build and manage such plants, adding that the company would start the construction of its next treatment plant in Kumasi by January 2019.
