The first runner-up of the 29th edition of the National Best Farmer Awards held in 2013 has presented agricultural inputs valued at GH¢7,200 towards the celebration of this year’s Farmers Day in the Upper West Region.

The 51 year-old farmer, Mr Abudulai Antiku, who hails from the Daffiama/Bussie/Issa (DBI) District of the region, made the donation to the Regional Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan.

Presenting the items, which included 50 knapsack sprayers, high quality seeds and agro-chemicals, Mr Antiku said they were his personal contributions to boost this year’s celebrations in the region.

He encouraged the youth to go into agriculture since it was rewarding and boosted the nation’s economy.

Sponsors

Receiving the items, the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan expressed his gratitude as the region needed sponsors for the celebrations.

He noted that the focus of the government had changed from ensuring food security to increasing incomes of farmers to improve the standard of living of the rural poor.

This, he said, was being done through various interventions such as the Planting for Food and Jobs, among others.

He called on benevolent organisations and individuals to emulate the example of Mr Antiku to make the day successful.
