The fifth avenue extension road in honour of Dr Hideyo Noguchi
The government of Ghana has renamed the fifth avenue extension road in honour of Dr Hideyo Noguchi.
A signage, which has been mounted at the beginning of the 900-metre road from the Switchback area was unveiled on Tuesday, 4 November 2018 in honour of Dr Noguchi.
Dr Noguchi was a prominent Japanese bacteriologist, who, in 1911 discovered the agent of Syphilis as the cause of progressive paralytic disease.
Dr Noguchi researched into Yellow Fever in Ghana and died from the disease in the country in 1928.
The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), a leading biomedical research facility in Accra, set up in 1979, was named after him.
The Institute is the result of joint efforts by Prof. E. O. Easmon, former Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School, Prof. Kenji Honda of Fukushima Medical School in Japan and the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).
It was built by the Government of Japan and donated to the Government and people of Ghana in honour of Dr Noguchi.
