Soroptimist International, a Non Governmental organization has embarked on an introduction of reusable sanitary pads project in the Akuapem South District in the Eastern Region.

Themed ‘Adolescent reproductive health education and the introduction of reusable sanitary pads project’, it sought to educate adolescent girls regarding menstrual problems.

The event held at the Presbyterian Teachers Training College, Akuapem, it drew girls from some Junior High Schools who were taken through lessons on menstruation as well as a demonstration of the use of the reusable pad.

Soroptimist Accra president, Mrs Kakra Taylor Hayford “We primarily seek to create the enabling environment to empower women in various fields.

“We help communities through girls and women and today’s project typifies how concern we are regarding girls reproductive health.

In the past, we have helped with the construction of boreholes in various communities.”

A project collaborator, Liz Jones from California, USA said empowering women and girls to realize their potential remains her outfit’s primary concern.

“We help girls make informed decisions, keep them in schools and to ensure the live productive successful lives,” said Jones.

The participating schools were categorized into groups for practical demonstration and lecture on female reproductive topics.

Since its establishment in 1986, it has embarked on many community projects aimed at improving the socio economic wellbeing of the people such as boreholes, the establishment of the Balme Library, University of Ghana, Kadjano cluster of schools library among other projects.
