GIJ extends registration for students after protest

Students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), who were not able to register for the semester exams have one last chance to do so as payment and registration for the semester have been extended for the final time.

The decision to extend registration follows a protest by students against a decision by authorities to prevent them from writing their end-of-semester exams over their failure to pay a substantial part of their fees. All students, now have up till Wednesday, December 5th, 2018, to make themselves eligible to sit the end-of-semester examinations.

“Management will open the online registration platform for students to pay the required amount and to enable them register. This window is for a period of three days with effect from Monday 3rd December, 2018 to midnight Wednesday 5th December, 2018. Those who missed the opportunity to register because they failed to meet the fee requirements will only be allowed to write the exams if they pay the required amount and have duly registered within the rescheduled deadline of Wednesday December 5th, 2018.

“Students who are on GETFund scholarship and other institutional scholarships that pay directly to the institute will be allowed to register and write the remaining examination on production of official letter from GETFund and the institutions concerned accordingly,” a statement signed by the Rector of the Institute Professor Kwabena Kwansah-Aidoo said.

At an emergency press conference organized to address all the issues, Professor Kwansah-Aidoo also announced new dates for the writing of Sunday’s cancelled exams.

Professor Kwansah-Aidoo said management would not bear the brunt for any student who fails to take advantage of this final opportunity.

The statement said papers that were scheduled on Sunday, December 2, 2018 for the undergraduate students will now be written on Sunday December 16, 2018, and that of the graduate students on Sunday December 23, 2018.

The protest resulted in the cancellation of two examination papers which were to be written at 1:00pm and 4:00pm on Sunday.

“On Sunday, December 2, the student protests and tensed atmosphere on campus led management to call in the police to maintain law and order, and the examinations as scheduled for Sunday were suspended.”

“However, from Monday, December 3, the remaining examination will come on as planned. Therefore, students who have paid their fees and are duly registered are required to take their examinations as scheduled on the examination timetable.”

Eligibility for exams

Meanwhile, the school has said that all students were given ample time to make the required payments of their fees with the University extending the deadline for payment on multiple occasions.

Hence, management said it will only give clearance to students who have made the payments and duly registered to sit for the exams.

“Students who have paid their fees and registered are eligible to take part in exams. These include students who faced challenges with registration online and were assisted by the Academic Affairs Department to register. However, management is still eager to consider studenta who paid the required fees by the November 21 deadline, and have been unable to register online for any reason”, the statement added.

School authorities further warned that students who are eligible to write the exams but fail to present themselves, do so at their own risk.
