The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) wants the President to acknowledge his predecessor’s infrastructural achievements as he tours key projects in the nation’s capital today.

During the three-day tour of the Greater Accra Region starting Tuesday, December 4, President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will commission and inspect 10 major infrastructural projects.

On this tour, like 20 other such visits since his assumption of office, “President Akufo-Addo will make time to interact with chiefs and people, key stakeholders in the region as well as the Regional Security Councils,” Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, told journalist at a press briefing on Sunday.

However, in a press statement issued on Monday by NDC National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the opposition party said the “tour of President Akufo Addo will bring to the fore the palpable and incontrovertible investments of the Mahama administration in infrastructure development. It is our hope that President Akufo-Addo will for once acknowledge the facts and credit his predecessor where credit is due.”

Sammy Gyamfi suggests that this appeal to the President to acknowledge former President John Mahama’s achievements has become important because of “government’s unbridled penchant for plagiarising and appropriating credit for projects of the NDC-Mahama Administration.”

“Despite the fact that the NDC subscribes to the principle of governance being a continuum, and that successive governments must pursue projects commenced by preceding governments in line with the Directive Principles of State Policy, we believe in giving credit where credit is due. We think that successive governments have a moral duty to be fair and candid in how they appropriate credit for projects initiated and commenced by their predecessors. It was in recognition of this moral duty that the previous NDC-Mills/Mahama Administration invited former President Kufuor to the commissioning ceremony of the N1 George W. Bush Highway in February 2012, and in that same vein, we expect nothing but candour on the part of President Akufo-Addo during this tour,” NDC said in the release.

The full release, published below, also lists infrastructural projects by the former administration to lend credence to the claim that it built many of the projects that the current President will commission.
