Southampton sack manager Mark Hughes with club in Premier League relegation zone

Mark Hughes has been sacked as manager of Southampton after eight months in charge.

Assstant manager Mark Bowen and first team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left St Mary’s, the club announced on Monday.

A Saints statement read: “We would like to express our thanks to Mark and his staff for all of their efforts during their time at St Mary’s.

“The search for a new manager to take the club forward is already under way.”

Hughes signed a new three-year contract in the summer having guided the club to safety after replacing Mauricio Pellegrino on a short-term deal in March.

But Southampton have won just one of their 14 games this season and, following the 2-2 draw at home against Manchester United on Saturday, are sitting 18th in the Premier League table.

Former goalkeeper and first-team assistant coach Kelvin Davis, who played over 300 times for the club, has been placed in caretaker charge for Wednesday’s clash with Tottenham at Wembley.
