‘Cop turned robber’ arrested for stabbing girlfriend and her sister

A 38-year-old former police sergeant has been arrested for attempting to murder his girlfriend and her twin sister.

“According to the information received, the suspect went to his girlfriend’s home and on arrival, broke the window of the room in which the victims were sleeping and started stabbing his girlfriend,” the police said in a statement.

“The twin sister was also stabbed when she apparently attempted to come to the rescue of her sister. After this brutal attack, the suspect disappeared and attempted to take his own life.”

The attack happened at Mmotwaneng village, Limpopo, on Sunday at about 10.30pm.

The former cop was found hiding at his friend’s place at Mmotoaneng.

“The suspect was a police sergeant attached to Motetema police station and was dismissed from the police service two months ago after he was arrested for armed robbery that he [is alleged to have] committed in April.”

His girlfriend and sister were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Limpopo provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, said, “This type of criminality must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The police will act decisively against any perpetrator of crimes against women and children.”

The suspect will soon appear in the Motetema magistrate’s court outside Groblersdal on two counts of attempted murder.
