The Vice Chancellor of the Sunyani Technical University, Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah has appealed to the government to give it financial clearance to enable it employ additional staff to mount its four-year B-Tech programmes. According to him, the university continued to experience a reduction in its staff strength due to retirement and resignations.

“However, the university is unable to recruit qualified and experienced staff to fill the vacancies as a result of our inability to receive appreciable financial clearance”, he stated at the 23rd matriculation of the university.

Admissions

This year, a total of 1,914 students were admitted into the university to pursue courses in science, technology and engineering and business-related programmes.

Addressing the fresh students, Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah observed that enrolment statistics over the past three years indicated that admission into engineering, technology and science-based programmes in both Higher National Diploma (HND) and Top-Up Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) programmes had seen appreciable yearly increase in contrast with the decline in business and other related programmes.

“This trend must be sustained as it is in line with our core mandate as a technical university per the Technical Universities Act, 2016 (Act 922, as Amended).

Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah announced that the university had submitted a number of four-year B-tech programmes to the National Accreditation Board (NAD) and the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) for accreditation and expressed the hope that the programmes would be approved to be run for the 2019/2020 academic year.

“It is our expectations that the introduction of the four-year B-Tech programmes will put the university on a level playing field with other universities across the globe to enable us compete for students both locally and internationally”.

Discipline

Touching on discipline, Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah reminded the freshmen that they had been admitted to be trained not only in academic work but also help them to form a good character to enable them to become responsible citizens in future to contribute positively to Ghana’s development.

“Negative acts such as rebellion to authority or breaking of laid down rules and regulations should not be seen in you as culprits of such acts will not be spared by the university authorities”, he warned.

Prof. Adinkrah-Appiah said there were laid down procedures to seek redress to issues, explaining that the resort to anti-social means of resolving students’ grievances would not be entertained.

‘Let me inform you that students whose interest is to foment trouble in the university will be dealt with drastically through the appropriate disciplinary procedures”.

“Stay away from deviant behaviours that would drag the reputation of the university in the mud”, he warned and advised the freshmen to rather attach seriousness to their studies in order to attain academic excellence.
