The Ugandan pop star turned Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popularly known as Bobi Wine has described Ghana an example the youth of Uganda look up to when it comes to democracy.

Bobi Wine in an engagement with a group of Ugandans and Ghanaians in Accra yesterday [Friday] described Ghana as a beacon of democracy.

“……and yes because we are in Ghana the beacon of democracy according to how we see it, I know Ghanaians have all right to take this for granted because I know you are certainly not where you want to be but in my opinion you are on the way to where you want to be,” he said.

According to the pop star turn MP, where Ghana is in term of democracy is a dream for most Ugandans and a level where Ugandan’s aspire to be.

Bobi Wine also said he envies young Ghanaians because they can speak freely and participate in the governance process being without being harassed by the State.

He stated that in Uganda it was impossible for four or more people to gather without a permit from the Inspector General of the Police.

Bobi Wine, therefore, urged Ghanaians to never take their democratic rights for granted.

In August, a group that called itself #FreeBobiWine in Ghana comprising of Ugandans living in Ghana and some Ghanaians joined in the call for the release of Bobi Wine.

In August Bobi Wine and 35 others were arrested and reportedly tortured and beaten while in custody, something denied by the authorities.

Bobi Wine and more than 30 other opposition politicians were charged with treason after the president’s convoy was allegedly pelted with stones after a campaign rally.
