Queens Win AlgeriaGhana’s Black Queens celebrating their winning goal

A first-half strike by defender Gladys Amfobea ensured the Black Queens of Ghana made a winning start to the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations defeating Algeria 1-0 in the opening match of the tournament on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Amfobea, 20, scored the only goal of the tie in the 12th minute of the game which the hosts dominated.

However, the Queens were let down by poor shooting on countless occasions – finding the target only 7 times from 23 attempts much to the frustration of the sparse partisan crowd at the stadium.

The LadyStrikers defender capitalised on the failure of the Algerian defence to deal effectively with a cross from the left flank to volley home a loose ball from the edge of the penalty box.

The powerful shot sailed over the head of Algerian goalie Kahina Takenint and gave the queens a deserved halftime lead.

Back from the halftime break, the Queens continued to threaten the Algerian goal but were unable to capitalise on their massive possession.
