Kathrada murder suspects appear in court

Nine suspects aged 16 to 60 who allegedly murdered relatives of the late struggle activist Ahmed Kathrada appeared in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate Court in the North West province on Thursday.

They are facing two charges of murder and one count of attempted robbery.

The incident took place at a house in Schweizer-Reneke where Kathrada’s nephew and grand nephew were killed.

Police said Ahmed Kathrada, 28, arrived home and opened the house gate and burglary door. He was then overpowered by two suspects and shot in the chest.

His mother, inside the house, heard the noise and called her husband to help. Yunus Kathrada, 65, opened the door and was fatally shot in the head.

His son, Ahmed, was taken to hospital, but died on arrival.  The suspects fled the scene and no items were stolen.

The men were arrested on Monday and Tuesday after a provincial task team was established and a search operation was conducted .

Police confiscated a firearm and two vehicles that were allegedly used in the crime.

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation welcomed the arrests.
