Danish Ambassador to Ghana interacting with beneficiaries during her tour in the Northern Region
Mrs Tove Degnbol, Danish Ambassador to Ghana, has toured some projects being implemented in the Mion District of the Northern Region.
The projects included the Soybean Processing Factory constructed under the Communities United in Fighting Child Hunger project, and Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) women’s groups under the Food Security, Livelihood and Women Empowerment initiative.
The VSLA project is a self-managed and self-capitalized microfinance system working to empower, reduce poverty and improve the livelihoods of women whiles the factory, yet to start full operations, is to help process soybean into various soy products to help in addressing child malnutrition and hunger in the district.
The projects are being implemented by the Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA) in partnership with the Community Livelihood Improvement Programme (CLIP) through the Empowerment for Life Programme (EfL) with support from the Danish Government.
Mrs Tove Degnbol, after touring the projects at Sang over the weekend, expressed delight at the impact of the interventions, which were improving the livelihood of the people.
Mrs Degnbol lauded government for the introduction of the Ghana School Feeding Programme to provide food to children at schools to improve their nutritional status, which was necessary for improved education outcomes.
She said child malnutrition and hunger among children and women are a terrible situation and appealed to government to enrol more of such programmes in other districts in the region to help reverse the situation.
Mr Mohammed Hashim, District Chief Executive for Mion, said interventions such as One-District One-Factory were to create a conducive environment to facilitate as well as promote private sector investment through the establishment of factories in the Districts.
He said there is the need for women to organize themselves into cooperatives in the District to venture into shea collection, which remains one of the untapped resources within the District.
Alhaji Osman Abdel-Rahman, Executive Director of GDCA, expressed gratitude to the Danish Government for supporting major interventions in the country to ensure sustainable development.
