Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has given the reason behind the intervention of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in the impasse between students and authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

According to the MP, the intervention was because the Asante overlord was unhappy about the government’s unlawful intervention.

He said the Asante monarch, who is the Chancellor of the university’s invitation to the Vice-Chancellor means government failed to resolve the issue.

Mr. Ablakwa said claims that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei only expressed willingness in the issue recently are an untruth because he has never been unwilling.

“Government has to be very careful. They should not create the impression that Otumfuo has expressed unwillingness. The truth is Otumfuo was not happy with government’s unlawful intervention and that is why he intervened. When was he unwilling in the first place,” he quizzed.

The recent impasse at the university between the student body, its internal security and the Management, resulted in the destruction of over 40 cars and 10 motorbikes as well as other state and private properties, following a peaceful demonstration that turned violent.

The North Tongu MP urged the government not to engage in any conduct that will bring the name of the Asante monarch into disrepute.

He called on the Ghanaians to laud Otumfuo for putting his feet down and asking the government to reinstate the Council.

The MP also argued that the situation at KNUST aggravated because of the failure of leadership by the government.
