Basigi backs Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon to win World Cup slots

Former Black Queens head coach, Yusif Basigi

Former Ghana women national team coach Yusif Basigi believes the Black Queens are favourites to represent Africa alongside Nigeria and Cameroon at the 2019 Fifa Women World Cup holding in France.

With the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations about to kick off next month in Ghana, the top three finishers of the tournament will automatically book their place in the global competition.

In 2015, reigning African champions Nigeria and debutants Cameroon, as well as Cote d’Ivoire, represented the continent after Fifa increased Africa’s slots from two to three.

“This time around there are no minnows in football so I expect a wonderful tournament in Ghana next month. Now you can see every country play well,” Basigi told Happy FM.

“But I think Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon will be the three countries to represent Africa at the World Cup which will be hosted in France next year.

“South Africa could also pull a surprise but I feel the three teams I have mentioned earlier will make it to the World Cup after the Africa Women Cup of Nations. I expect these countries to win medals,” he added.

Basigi, who currently handles Ghana U-20 side, won bronze with the Black Queens in the last edition of the Africa Women Cup of Nations.
