The fate of the Ghana Premier League could be decided by the Ghana Football Association (GFA)? Congress in the coming days after a joint meeting between the Normalisation Committee (NC) and club owners at the Alisa Hotel in Accra today ended in a deadlock.
The meeting, the first between the four-member NC and representatives of Premier and Division One League clubs, was to dialogue on the way forward for Ghana Football.
However, while some clubs wanted the league to continue, majority held the view that it was only appropriate for the competition to be truncated to make way for a fresh season following the allegations of bribery and corruption which tainted it.
The league had to be abandoned after the first round in the aftermath of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Number 12 investigative piece on bribery and corruption which was premiered on June 6 at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
To break the deadlock, the NC, led by president Dr. Kofi Amoah, pleaded for time to search through the GFA Statutes if they could find the appropriate article to resolve the matter.
If that option fails, the NC would have no choice than to call for an extraordinary congress as early as possible to resolve the issue and pave the way for the new season.
The debate over whether to truncate the league or not has been going on for the past five months.
The proponents of the truncation argue that the league could not continue because there is the urgent need for reforms to purge the system and get new sub-committees in place to run the various competitions on a clean sheet.
